So I get there are throngs of paleo, grassroots diet-types who play up the benefits of grass-fed liver. My husband is one of them. I think I have an open and adventurous palette, but I can’t really hop on board with the flavor. I do appreciate that liver is a very nutrient-dense organ, and would never waste it!
A friend of mine raises Bernese Mountain dogs. Her dog, Skye, will soon whelp a litter of puppies, and friends of ours threw her a delightful puppy shower to celebrate. I wanted to gift something thoughtful, but also plastic-free and zero-waste. I told you how our family purchased a pig for our freezer, and we also did the same with a lamb. I decided to use the liver from our local, organically raised, grass-fed and paper-wrapped lamb and try to make dog treats. Here’s the recipe I concocted myself from different sites:
Liver Dog Treats (Zero-Waste)
1 cup oatmeal (bulk bin)
3-4 cups cubed lamb liver (mine was wrapped in recyclable butcher paper. Also consider buying at the store in your own container)
2-3 eggs (from our backyard hens)
3 Tbs. arrowroot powder (bulk spice section)
In the bowl of a food processor, chop oatmeal until it forms a powder, then blend in arrowroot powder, pulsing to combine. Add liver and eggs, and puree until smooth. Add more or less powder to achieve a thick paste. Spread onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and smooth to a uniform 1/2″ thickness. Cook in a 400 degree oven until it dries out on top, approximately 30 minutes. Turn and cook for another 15-20 minutes. Cut into chunks and store in a glass jar. Compost the eggshells, parchment paper, and resulting dog poop.
Lily found out that some disposal companies, including ours, can compost your pet waste! So even when your dog is done with these, they need not go to the landfill!
I repurposed my daughter’s school artwork as gift wrap, and made a donation in the guest of honor’s name to a local animal organization of her choice to round out my zero-waste gift.
